Clue 1 - Crap, where is Dryden? (leading to Civilian War Memorial)

Clue 1 was issued to teams in 2 parts. The actual clue merely tells agents that their task, after eliminating Fisher, is to look for Dryden, and that all the information needed has already been provided. The "meat" of the clue is contained in the Casino Guide which had earlier been distributed to teams as part of their mission kit. In particular, the passage on the game of Craps, on page 12 of the guide, has the word "Dryden" scribbled in the top corner as a signpost.

The passage on Craps is an acrostic that was adapted from wikipedia (as were all the other passages). Reading down the first letter of each line gives the message "considerthefirstletterofthefourthwords", while reading down the first letter of the fourth word of each line gives the answer to the clue, "civilianwarmemorialfrontsidebeachroad". The clue was hidden on the main podium of the memorial, in some bushes in the corner closest to St Andrew's Cathedral.

GC initially rated this clue easy. However, given that it was the first clue, many teams had not "gotten into GC's minds" yet, and as such an inordinate number of hints was given out. As the Game progressed, teams would have gotten a better feel for how answers are embedded into clues. For this particular clue, some teams guessed Fisher Street and another even wanted to search in the National Library for all poems written by John Dryden!

On hindsight most of the clues seems manageable. some even appear easy!

But when we were there trying to solve the clues, our team really found it very tough. Without any concrete and specific directions to start off with, we were on a wild goose chase.

So this was really a good starter for the game. Though not my favorite! haha

Our race got off a slow start as we trekked up and down Fisher St for anything that might be remotely related to Dryden, Crap (Sewerage?) or James Bond. As we sat there pondering, someone finally thought of Craps and we discovered the signpost in the Casino Guide. A call to Mission Control confirmed that we were finally on the right track, but that the real search had just begun.

After a few minutes of blank stares, we headed down to Bras Besah to make photocopies of the codebook and casino guide for everyone so we could work together. This would turn out to be invaluable throughout the race as a handy source of rough paper. More importantly, a concurrent trip to McDonalds finally silenced the constant whining of our insatiable driver, for a while at least.

Our first hypothesis was that there might be some discrepency hidden within the rules, so an online search brought us to the Wikipedia entry. While we concluded that the book was taken from Wikipedia, the disparities were all in insignificant words, and there were too many of them to draw any meaningful conclusion.

What seemed like an eternity later, the thought finally occured to us that perhaps it was not the words that were important, but something special about the position of the words. A glance down the left column confirmed this, and we were soon on our way to the Civilian War Memorial.

We drew two important lessons from this first encounter:
1) Call Mission Control before you scout out the suspected location
2) Don't think too deeply into things

We followed the first principle religiously henceforth, but the second habit was a little harder to break.
